West Ham United left it late to beat Accrington Stanley on Wednesday night.

Dimitri Payet came to the rescue for West Ham in a manner unsurprising of the 29-year-old’s quality.

The Frenchman struck a last-minute free kick which helped the Irons seal a fourth-round League Cup spot, and end a miserable run of form for the Hammers in the process.

Slaven Bilic’s side have won one and lost four of their first five Premier League games so far in this campaign, and if not for Payet’s moment of magic then their season may have taken another major turn for the worst had it gone into extra time.

Consequence of their win, the East Londoners will now face Chelsea at the Olympic Stadium on October 25 or 26, giving them over a month in which to prepare.

There were very few major shocks in the third round of this competition, with West Ham joining Arsenal, the Blues, Tottenham, Liverpool and both Manchester clubs in the last-16 stage of the tournament.

But the Irons’ former goalkeeper David James has intimated that his old side may have been the casualty of the round, if not for the majestic 29-year-old.

West Ham will look to get back to winning ways on Sunday when they host Southampton in the capital.
