David James has told Sky Sports News (Thursday, 10.45AM) that Newcastle signing Kieran Trippier could help them bring in other English players. The retired goalkeeper recalled an anecdote, involving Sol Campbell.

Trippier, 31, is expected to be announced as the first signing of the club’s new ownership. The Times say he will be handed a £100,000-a-week deal – and that he will sign a contract until 2024.

Newcastle are expected to bring in numerous players this month, along with Trippier. Eddie Howe needs more quality at the back. That, as well as cover for the likes of Allan Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson.

Ex-England goalkeeper James believes Trippier can help them bring in players. He recalled calling Campbell, who had just joined Portsmouth in a relegation scrap, to decide whether he himself would join the club.

“When Sol Campbell signed for Portsmouth, I rang him and asked if we were going to do it properly. He said we were, so I signed,” James said, when asked about the signing of Trippier and other additions on Tyneside.

“If Kieran Trippier does sign for Newcastle, other players, especially other English players will be able to contact him. He could lure them into the battle. It is a significant signing, and a signal of intent.”

James on Trippier: Newcastle could open the flood gates this month

Bringing in Trippier is a mammoth signing. His leadership, his versatility, his defensive nous sharpened under Diego Simeone, his set-piece ability, makes him a crucial – yet brilliant addition for Newcastle.

Even without James’ suggestion, that players could call Trippier about a move to Newcastle – the actual signing of him might tempt players anyway. Newcastle also have the financial clout to bring in pretty much anyone.

James is right, Trippier could actually prove to help Newcastle in their January pursuit of signings. But his presence alone will surely tell players that the new owners are serious, and will do everything to avoid the drop.
