Newcastle United have a big call to make with their striker position in the summer because it is becoming a bit of an issue.

This isn’t because of a lack of quality, but the inability of players like Callum Wilson to remain fit and stay out of the treatment room.

The 31-year-old, who is out of contract at St James’ Park in 2025, is injured once again and is touch-and-go as to whether he will return this season.

David James was asked whether Newcastle should re-sign Ivan Toney from Brentford and he backed the move by also mentioning the unfortunate situation with Callum Wilson, as he told GGRecon

The former Premier League goalkeeper thinks Ivan Toney, who spent three years in Newcastle colours before leaving in 2018, would be a ‘natural fit’ for Eddie Howe’s side.

Sources have told HITC Football that a number of Premier League clubs are interested in signing the recently returning Brentford hitman this summer, including Arsenal, Spurs, Newcastle, Manchester United and Chelsea.

It seems highly likely that the 27-year-old will leave this summer, for big money, it’s just a case of who will be able to lure him to their club.

If the Magpies had the finances to bring him in, then David James can see this proving to be a fit, especially with how Eddie Howe likes his teams to play.

Ivan Toney return to Newcastle United?

“Given Callum Wilson’s injury record this season, and I hope he can get himself fit to be in the conversation to go to Euro 2024 in the summer, but if there’s an ongoing issue for him there, then I think there’s a natural fit for Ivan Toney at Newcastle when you consider the way that Eddie Howe likes his side to play,” said James.

“If I had to choose where Ivan should go in the summer, then I would say Arsenal or Newcastle United, but it all depends on whether these teams are looking to win titles or just have a top goalscorer.”

Big call from Ivan Toney

This next move from Toney simply can’t go wrong because it will just derail his career when he is hitting the peak of his powers.

The England international has no time to make mistakes or relax because of his age and he needs to be challenging near the top pretty much straight away.

From the player’s perspective, if a club that’s not in Europe comes knocking, then he should just bat it away because he doesn’t have time to join a slow long-term project.

Toney is for the here and now, which on the list of interested parties is Arsenal because there is every chance they are champions of England in May.
