Rangers have been in a state of disarray recently, after the controversial departure of Mark Warburton from his role as manager of the Glasgow club.

But in comparison to their previous troubles this is nothing.

Rangers have had to rise up from the bottom after financial trouble saw them drop down to the bottom rung of professional football in Scotland.

When it happened many of the club’s biggest and brightest talents left, to ensure regular paydays elsewhere and to not play at such a low-level.

But one man who said he would have played for the club for free is Northern Ireland legend David Healy.

He joined the Ibrox side from Sunderland in 2011 and spent 18 months at the club. When his contract expired, Rangers let him go. But he told the Daily Record today that he would have played for nothing at Ibrox:

“I still remember going into the administrators Duff and Phelps to speak to them and also to Ally McCoist. Players were trying to sort things and we signed an agreement that we would take a 50 or 75 per cent wage cut.

“We signed that and it was put into the contracts. People also asked for clauses in their contracts.

“I didn’t need anything to be put into mine as a clause because my contract was up. I had just asked Duff and Phelps if I could I stay an extra year.

“The administrators were probably looking at me as if I was mad and thinking, ‘This club could fold and you are asking for an extra year’.

“I wanted to stay and would have stayed and played for nothing for Rangers.”

Healy’s comments just highlight how big a club Rangers still are. Despite their woes in the Scottish Premiership and off the pitch, big enough names will always be interested in working for Rangers.

That’s why the club must press to bring in a top manager to guide the club forward if they are to catch their Old Firm rivals.
