Will Glasgow Rangers give Celtic a Guard of Honour at Ibrox? David Healy hopes so.

Former Rangers hitman David Healy has told The Scottish Sun that his old club should give Celtic a Guard of Honour on Sunday.

Celtic visit Ibrox this weekend in their first game since clinching an eighth successive Scottish Premiership title.

If it was against any other team then the opposition players would be applauding the Hoops on to the field, but The Scottish Sun reported on Tuesday that Rangers had no intention of honouring the newly-crowned champions in this traditional manner.

The Scottish game has been taken into disrepute following a number of unsavoury incidents, from several different clubs, this season.

And Healy, who had a year with the Gers until 2012, says that old side should show their respect to Celtic – who are nine points ahead of them and going for a third successive domestic treble – in an effort to repair the image of the division.

He told The Scottish Sun: “My personal opinion is Celtic have more than earned the right for any team to give them a guard of honour.

“They have won the title with two games left and are deserved champions. Looking at it from the outside, I think it would go down very well, especially following all of the negative issues in Scottish football this season.

“It would be a huge thing for Rangers to give Celtic a guard of honour on Sunday. Not just because of the Rangers-Celtic element of things, but for Scottish football as a whole. I think it would help bring back a positive image of the game.

“Then, if Rangers were to win the league next year or whenever, it could be reciprocated by Celtic.”

Healy is probably right. It would be a breath of fresh air and a huge sacrifice if the light Blues put Old Firm hatred to one side and applauded their Glasgow rivals for the sake of Scottish football, but it’s very unlikely to happen.
