Celtic were reportedly interested in signing Everton’s James McCarthy and West Bromwich Albion’s James Morrison in the summer transfer window.

David Hay has suggested in The Glasgow Evening Times that Celtic did not sign James McCarthy from Everton in the summer transfer window due to injury concerns.

According to The Daily Record, Scottish Premiership giants Celtic were interested in securing the services of McCarthy.

It was reported on transfer deadline day that the Bhoys wanted Everton to subsidise part of the 25-year-old midfielder’s wages.

In the end, the former Hamilton Academical and Wigan Athletic man remained at Goodison Park.

Former Celtic midfielder and manager Hay, who is 68 years of age, believes that McCarthy’s move to the Bhoys did not happen due to injury concerns.

Hay has also commented on Celtic’s (reported) failure to sign James Morrison from West Bromwich Albion in the summer transfer window.

According to The Daily Record, the 30-year-old Scotland international midfielder was keen on joining Brendan Rodgers’s side, but the West Brom chiefs did not let him leave.

“I do think the fact that James McCarthy has had to go under the knife might have played a part in the fact that there was nothing from Celtic there, while West Brom were reluctant to allow James Morrison to go,” Hay wrote in The Glasgow Evening Times.

Celtic signed Kolo Toure, Scott Sinclair and Cristian Gamboa among others in the summer transfer window.

The Hoops will return to action next weekend when they take on Old Firm rivals Rangers at Celtic Park in the Scottish Premiership.
