West Ham United have completed the free agent signing of veteran Patrice Evra.
West Ham United co-owner David Gold has posted a welcome to the Hammers’ newest signing Patrice Evra on Twitter – but Hammers fans have criticised the signing in their replies.
The 36-year-old joins the east Londoners after being released by French side Marseille earlier this season, following an altercation that saw the ex-Manchester United left-back lash out at a fan during a warm-up.
Evra joins a West Ham side that are struggling to avoid a Premier League relegation fight, as although they sit in a comfortable 12th place in the table, they are only three points above 18th-placed Stoke City.
Gold welcomed Evra to the club as the Hammers completed a third signing under the stewardship of David Moyes, following January deals for Euro 2016 winner Joao Mario and target man Jordan Hugill.
The 81-time France international joins on a contract until the end of the season to rival Aaron Cresswell for the left-back slot, with Arthur Masuaku being used as a left winger of late instead.
Hammers fans reacted to Gold’s welcoming Tweet, with the majority criticising the signing of Evra largely due to his age. Some also reacted sarcastically to the West Ham board’s lack of spending, with one Tweeting: “Oooo big spender”.
