The West Ham United star caused somewhat of a stir when some of his tweets from five years ago emerged.

West Ham co-owner David Gold sat down for an exclusive interview with the Sun, and shared how he believes Hammers fans will respond to Declan Rice’s controversial IRA comments on Twitter from 2015.
The comments obviously do not represent who the 20-year-old truly is, but they caused a real storm, nevertheless.
Rice has been exceptional for West Ham this season, earning a call-up to the England squad in the process, and he undoubtedly has a wonderfully exciting future ahead of him in the game.
He will be hoping that the comments he made five years ago are forgotten rather than dwelled upon, however.
And that’s what Hammers co-owner Gold believes will happen.
The 82-year-old sat down for an exclusive interview with the Sun, and suggested that West Ham fans will be right behind their man:

“The important thing is that he didn’t hide from it. He apologised and recognised it as a mistake. He has handled it well and now it’s over. He is growing into a man now. He was 14 or 15 when he said those things. We all said silly stuff at that age. West Ham supporters will only worry about his performance for England and how these past few days will most definitely be of huge benefit to their club.”
The best way for Rice to put those comments behind him will be by performing on the pitch for both West Ham and England.
And if he plays anything like he has done all season, he won’t have any problems at all.
