Liverpool face Manchester United on Monday night in the Premier League.

Former Liverpool striker David Fairclough has told the club’s official website that he believes the Reds will have to show some patience against Manchester United, but will have to take their chances when they come.

The Reds face their fierce rivals on Monday night and will look to continue their impressive start to the season against Jose Mourinho’s side.

Three points separate the sides in the Premier League, with Liverpool currently in fourth place going into the game, while United currently occupy sixth place.

Fairclough told the official Liverpool website: “Clearly, we’ll have to be prepared for a patient spell and hopefully we don’t get frustrated.

“We won’t want to give anything away and they certainly won’t come and create an open game. It’s up to everyone to remain patient and continue to do the things we do well.

“We know that we’ll get chances and, when those chances come, you have to be ready. You’re not going to get an abundance of chances against Manchester United and we have to appreciate that, when they come, we can’t afford to waste them.”

There are some preparing for a defensive United side at Anfield but they are a side that has plenty of attacking talent which is enough to keep Liverpool guessing ahead of this game, but Fairclough clearly wants Liverpool to be clinical in front of goal.

Liverpool will feel they have enough firepower to hurt their opponents given they are the joint top scorers in the league so far this season but one thing they will want to do is ensure they tighten up at the back having failed to keep a single clean sheet so far this term.

It’s likely to be a fascinating early-season encounter, where a win for either side could send out a message to the rest of the league for very different reasons. It would be another big scalp for Liverpool, while it would be a reminder from United to their doubters after a recent sticky run of form that they shouldn’t be written off this season.
