Shrewsbury Town midfielder David Edwards has told The Daily Mail that Wolverhampton Wanderers will be challenging for the top six in the Premier League within the next five years.

Wolves won automatic promotion from the Championship to the Premier League at the end of last season.

The Wanderers have been superb in the top flight of English football so far this campaign and could well end up seventh in the league table.

Nuno’s side are seventh in the Premier League table at the moment with 38 points from 25 matches.

Shrewsbury midfielder Edwards played for Wolves from 2008 until 2017 when he joined Reading for a transfer fee reported by The Express & Star to be worth £1 million – and the Welshman has admitted that he has been surprised at how quick Wolves have achieved what they had set up to do under Fosun International.

The 33-year-old midfielder has also predicted Wolves to be challenging for the Premier League top six within the next five years.

Edwards told The Daily Mail: “You knew something special was going to happen when Fosun came in. They had this vision and whether it took three years or 10 years, Wolves were going to get to the heights of English football.

“It’s happened faster than anyone thought, but I can’t see them stopping. I think they’ll be playing in European competition soon and competing in the top six within five years, definitely.”

Bold prediction?

Wolves have some brilliant players, such as Ruben Neves and Rui Patricio, and if the Wanderers continue to invest in their squad, then they are only going to get better.

It will take some work for the Wanderers to break into the top six, but with Arsenal in a transition period and Chelsea not look as formidable as they once were, perhaps Wolves could challenge for the European spots soon.
