David Duval has claimed that he would ideally like to play his last Open Championship at The Old Course at St Andrews as he confirmed that he has not made his final appearance in the event this week.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Duval was not able to make the cut at Royal Birkdale. The American was making his first start in a major since The Open Championship back in 2022.
What do you think about Bryson DeChambeau's conduct with the media?
Duval did actually threaten to roll back the years in Southport. The Champion Golfer of the Year for 2001 started the second round at three over par.
But he began his round on Friday with successive birdies on the first and second holes. Unfortunately, those would prove to be his final birdies of the week.
David Duval reveals how long he plans to continue playing in The Open for
Duval signed for a 77 to finish at 10 over par. Admittedly, he was far from the only player to find himself tripped up by Royal Birkdale.
The good news is that the former world number one is not planning to bow out just yet. He is eligible to continue playing in The Open until he turns 61, and it seems that the 54-year-old is intending to make the most of his status.

“I will be at St Andrews next year. I will be at Lytham, where I won, the year after that. Then I’ll look at where they’re playing after that,” he said.
“Obviously at this point in my life and career, I have to look at kind of an exit, but if things hold true to the five-year St Andrews schedule, ’32 would be I’m 60, St Andrews, walk up 18 on Sunday preferably and give away my stuff and be done.”
Tiger Woods may have a similar idea to David Duval
St Andrews has provided the stage for a number of emotional farewells over the years. The likes of Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson made their final Open Championship appearances at The Home of Golf.
There is no venue in the world that can compete with The Old Course when it comes to history and prestige.
So Duval may not be the only former Open champion who makes a final major appearance at the venue in the coming years.
Few will forget the scenes as Tiger Woods walked up the 18th fairway on Friday during The Open back in 2022. Even Woods could not help but get emotional over the ovation he received.
Obviously, there is a huge question mark over whether Woods will play in another tournament. His health and wellbeing clearly come first, and no golf event should jeopardise that.
But if Woods is able to play in one more tournament, perhaps it should surprise no one if it proves to be an Open Championship at St Andrews.
