West Ham United have been linked with a move for Celta Vigo forward Maxi Gomez all summer.
TalkSport pundit David Connolly has compared West Ham United target Maxi Gomez to the Premier League’s all-time record goalscorer Alan Shearer.
Connolly, who played for the Hammers during the early noughties, stated that if his former club can get a deal wrapped up for Gomez then they would be signing a player who is built like a ‘tank’ and someone who would be a fantastic purchase.
The Telegraph recently claimed that West Ham are waiting to hear from Gomez this week, as the English club go head-to-head with Valencia for his signature.
Speaking to the Final Word on TalkSport (07/07/19 at 7:50 pm), Connolly offered nothing but praise for Gomez and the qualities he has in his locker.
“Maxi Gomez in an out-and-out centre-forward,” Connolly told TalkSport. “I did a lot of Spanish games for TalkSport last few years, and last season he and Celta didn’t have a great season, they just about avoided relegation, but he still scored 13 goals.
“The partnership he had with Iago Aspas was absolutely brilliant. He [Gomez] was the muscle. He won everything in the air. He’s about 6ft 3, he’s massive like a tank
On if he’s a Shearer-type player: “Yes, maybe a little bit bigger. I wouldn’t say he’s as tall as a Carroll, but he’s not too far off it. He’s excellent in the air. You could build your attack off him. But the season before last, he was phenomenal. He was one in two. I think he’d be a fantastic signing.”
West Ham’s reported interest for Gomez has been rumbling on for some time now and Manuel Pellegrini will want the player through the door as quick as possible.
The Hammers are a little short in the attacking department, and if you add to the possibility that more players might leave then they need to seal a deal for a striker pretty quickly.
Pre-season has already begun as West Ham will be preparing for the new Premier League campaign where they will be tasked in trying to reach Europe and possibly go on a cup run.
