England face Senegal in the Round of 16 at the 2022 Qatar World Cup after topping Group B. HITC Football looks at their recent last 16 record featuring a red card for David Beckham.
The Three Lions came through the opening round first in their group at the 22nd edition of FIFA’s quadrennial tournament. Gareth Southgate oversaw a 6-2 thrashing of Iran and beat Wales 3-0 either side of a goalless draw with the USA, who went through as the runner-up.
Senegal now await England on Sunday, December 4 as the Lions of Teranga ended Group A second to the Netherlands. The Qatar 2022 meeting is the first time that a Three Lions side faces the West Africans. England are unbeaten against the 15 nations they have met once.

England will face Senegal in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
England will contest a second round match at a World Cup for the 13th time at Qatar 2022 against Senegal. The Three Lions have previously failed to get out of their first round group on three occasions. They have also exited after the second round at three editions so far.
The three editions were England have left a World Cup in the second round include Spain 1982 and France 1998. But the former of the two editions featured a second group stage before the semi-finals. England initially topped Group 4 but only ended Group B in second.
The 2010 World Cup in South Africa last saw England eliminated in the Round of 16 under Fabio Capello. Roy Hodgson then oversaw their last elimination in the group stage during Brazil 2014. Southgate led England to the semi-finals at Russia 2018 but finished in fourth.
Losing in the third-place play-off four years ago saw England match their best finish at any World Cup since winning the title in 1966. The Three Lions also finished fourth at Italia 90. But they then failed to qualify for USA 1994 – the last tournament that they have sat out.
Across the seven World Cups since USA 1994, Qatar 2022 will feature England’s sixth tie in the Round of 16. So, HITC Football has taken a look at the Three Lions’ recent record in the second round ahead of Southgate’s squad meeting Senegal at Al Bayt Stadium on Sunday.
England needed penalties to record a Round of 16 win over Colombia at Russia 2018
England ultimately needed penalties to overcome Colombia in the Round of 16 at the 2018 Russia World Cup. Yerry Mina forced the Otkritie Arena in Moscow clash into extra time as the centre-half scored a 93rd-minute equaliser. Harry Kane had fired a penalty in the 57th.
Kane’s goal looked like it would be enough for England to advance before Mina pulled Los Cafeteros level in the dying seconds. The defender beat Jordan Pickford – who had pulled off a superb save to deny Mateus Uribe from 30 yards – with 27 seconds left on the clock.
Neither nation would find a breakthrough goal in the additional half-hour to send the clash to penalties. And it appeared like it would be the end of England’s tournament when David Ospina saved Jordan Henderson’s effort. But Uribe wasted Colombia’s great opportunity.
The midfielder smacked his shot into the crossbar to instantly let Kieran Trippier draw the tie level. Pickford then produced another stellar save to deny Carlos Bacca from 12 yards out. Then up-stepped Eric Dier to win England a World Cup penalty shootout for the first time.
England built on their win over Colombia – after finishing second to Belgium in Group G – by beating Sweden 2-0. But Mario Mandzukic sent Croatia into the final against France by netting a 109th-minute winner. Ivan Perisic had forced extra time after Trippier’s free-kick.

Lampard’s ghost goal saw Germany record a 4-1 Round of 16 win over England
England met Germany in the Round of 16 at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa after only just clawing their way out of Group C. Capello needed a 1-0 win over Slovenia to make the knockouts as Rob Green’s error gave the USA a 1-1 draw before drawing 0-0 with Algeria.
The last 16 clash in Bloemfontein would be a mix of controversy and calamity for the Three Lions. Die Mannschaft firmly deserved to win but Frank Lampard effectively drew England level at 2-2. Yet the linesman did not see the ball crash off the bar and past Manuel Neuer.
Germany took full advantage of their dominance to lead 2-0 in 32 minutes as Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski scored. But Matthew Upson gave England a reason to keep going as the centre-half scored in the 37th. Then Lampard thought he had drawn his nation level.
Lampard seized on the ball on the edge of the area and lifted a delightful shot over Neuer. It floated over the goalkeeper and clearly hit the ground behind the line after kissing the underside of the crossbar. That was, clear to everyone bar the linesman and the referee.
Neuer quickly grasped the ball as it bounced back into his six-yard area to keep play going. England’s determined protests were all in vain as Uruguayan referee Jorge Larrionda and his officials let the game continue. A chance that Germany were not going to let go to waste.
Lampard rattled the crossbar again early in the second period with a thunderous free-kick from 36 yards out. But Thomas Muller put an end to England’s hopes of a comeback with a quick-fire brace. He took full advantage of further poor England defending on 67’ and 70’.
Beckham made England history to beat Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup
Beckham made a piece of English football history at the 2006 World Cup to beat Ecuador in the Round of 16. The former Three Lions captain became the first England player to score at three editions of the FIFA tournament when his 30-yard free-kicked settled the meeting.
Carlos Tenorio had come close to giving Ecuador the lead in the opening exchanges when his shot deflected off Ashley Cole. Lampard also spurned two chances to build on Beckham scoring in the minutes after his free-kick floated over the wall and into the bottom corner.
Chances continued to fall for Lampard to either shoot or assist when he made a foray out of midfield. But he failed to finish the Three Lions’ attacks throughout the narrow clash in Stuttgart. Yet Beckham’s goal was enough to secure a quarter-final date against Portugal.
Beckham’s free-kick in the Round of 16 was also the last goal England scored at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Neither the Three Lions nor Portugal could find a breakthrough goal in the quarter-final through extra time. The Selecao then won 3-1 with their fifth penalty.

Heskey capped a strong first half for the Three Lions to beat Denmark in Japan
Emile Heskey capped a strong first-half from the Three Lions to help beat Denmark 3-0 in Niigata, Japan in 2002. But Brazil would end England’s time at the first World Cup held in multiple countries. The Selecao claimed a 2-1 win in the quarter-final en route to the title.
England had already survived a three-way fight with Sweden and Argentina to advance out of Group F. Sweden took the top spot on goals scored to England with both on five points. Argentina finished with four after Beckham scored the only goal in a 1-0 affair in Sapporo.
Denmark awaited England in the Round of 16 at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea after topping Group A. But the Three Lions took a 3-0 win in Niigata. It only took Rio Ferdinand five minutes to break the deadlock from Beckham’s corner at Big Swan Stadium.
Ferdinand would also inspire England’s second goal in the 22nd minute when his long ball fell to Heskey. Nicky Butt would then move the ball on, unintentionally, to Trevor Sinclair on the wing. Butt’s shot then squirmed through the defence before Michael Owen scored.
Heskey would later put the tie to bed in the 44th minute when the forward fired home his first-time shot from the edge of the box. But he could not stop Brazil from coming from behind in Shizuoka in the quarter-finals after Owen broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute.
Rivaldo drew the Selecao level in the second minute of first-half stoppage-time at Stadium Ecopa. Ronaldinho then only needed the first five minutes of the second period to score a would-be winning goal. He drilled his direct free-kick over an unsuspecting David Seaman.
Penalty heartbreak for England vs Argentina at France 1998 after Beckham’s red
England met a stern test in Argentina in the Round of 16 at the 1998 World Cup in France. The Three Lions had to face La Albiceleste having finished second to Romania in Group G. Argentina cruised through Group H with three wins, seven goals scored and none allowed.
The tie in Saint-Etienne was only the second time that England had faced Argentina since Diego Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ moment at the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. But the South Americans were in no mood to let the Three Lions take revenge for the quarter-final clash.
Daniel Passarella’s star-studded squad took the lead at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard after just five minutes with a Gabriel Batistuta penalty. It did not take England long to convert a penalty of their own, however, as Alan Shearer – their captain that summer – fired home.
Shearer’s second goal of the tournament gave England the momentum and Owen swiftly turned it into a 2-1 lead. At just 18 years old, Owen beat two defenders after displaying a supreme piece of ball control. He then struck high into the top corner in the 16th minute.
England were then the squad in control but returned to the dressing rooms at the break level. Juan Sebastien Veron picked out Javier Zanetti unmarked in the box with a free-kick in the first minute of stoppage time. The goal would ultimately send the tie to extra time.
But England had to dig in deep to stay in the 1998 World Cup after Beckham let aggression take control. Just two minutes into the second half, he mindlessly kicked out at Argentina captain Diego Simeone. Yet La Albiceleste failed to take advantage of their man advantage.

Beckham: The red card was ‘without doubt the worst moment of my career’
Penalties were ultimately needed to settle who would face the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. And it would be Argentina who advanced and heartbreak for England as Carlos Roa denied Paul Ince and David Batty. Seaman had denied Hernan Crespo before Ince missed.
Beckham immediately fronted up for his mistake of getting a red card after what had been a strong campaign at 23 years old. “This is, without doubt, the worst moment of my career,” he said then, via the Daily Mail. “I will always regret my actions during last night’s game.”
Glenn Hoddle brought Beckham into the line-up after impressing in his cameos from the bench. But Simeone took full advantage of the midfielder’s inexperience to get him sent off. It eventually worked after fouling Beckham from behind and then landing on top of him.
“I had tackled him and we both fell to the ground,” Simeone admitted to The Guardian in 2002. “As I was trying to stand up, that was when he kicked me from behind.
“And I took advantage of that. And I think any person would have taken advantage of that in just the same way.”
Simeone added: “Sometimes you get sent off, sometimes you don’t. Unfortunately for the English team, that time they lost a player. Anyway, you take advantage of all the opportunities you find in your life.”
Southgate will hope his England side keep cool heads when they face Senegal in the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to add another knockout stage win to their record.
