Rangers defender David Bates has told The Scottish Sun that training with Ibrox duo Alfredo Morelos and Jason Cummings is making him a better player.

Bates is one of the best young defenders in the Scottish Premiership and has established himself as a key figure in the current Rangers team.

The 21-year-old centre-back has stated that training with Morelos and Cummings is making him a better player, which is a bit unusual given that they are strikers and Bates is a defender.

Morelos and Cummings are two of the best young strikers in the Scottish Premiership, and both of them are in good form at the moment.

Bates told The Scottish Sun: “I obviously train against our strikers and they’re making me better — if you need to defend one-v-one against someone like Alfredo Morelos or Jason Cummings then you will get better from that.”

Old Firm derby

Bates will be a key player for Rangers in the Old Firm derby against Celtic at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon.

Celtic have some superb attacking players, such as Scott Sinclair, James Forrest and Moussa Dembele, and it will be interesting to see how Bates copes.

A win for Rangers on Sunday will blow the Scottish Premiership title race wide away.
