David Bates has told Rangers’ official website that he was struck by how passionately the visiting fans celebrated Sunday’s 2-1 win at Aberdeen.

Rangers completed a quickfire double over their rivals as the Ibrox side edged a narrow contest at Pittodrie on Sunday after thumping Derek McInnes’s side 3-0 in Glasgow during the week.

The Gers played well over half-an-hour yesterday with 10 men following Ryan Jack’s red card, but Josh Windass’s goal on 63 minutes doubled the lead after Danny Wilson opened the scoring on 14 minutes.

The Dons ensured it was a nervy end to the game for the travelling Rangers fans after Francis Ross reduced the deficit with 25 minutes to go, but a heroic defensive effort helped Graeme Murty’s side to a brilliant three points under the circumstances.

And Bates – who made his first start of the season yesterday – tells Rangers’ official website that he could see just how much it meant to the visiting supporters.

“When you heard that final whistle you could see from the pitch the way that the fans were reacting and erupting,” he said.

“Getting that three points when we were down to ten men is massive and when Josh got that second goal it gave us a little bit of comfort, but not that much when they scored that good free kick, but that’s just football.”

It was likely to be Murty’s final game during his very decent caretaker stint, winning four and losing two of his six games in charge.

The Star reported that McInnes would be named as Pedro Caixinha’s successor today.
