David Bates asked if wants to stay at Rangers and whether new contract has been offered

Glasgow Rangers defender David Bates’ Ibrox future is somewhat up in the air with his contract expiring in the summer.

David Bates has told Rangers’ official YouTube channel that he hopes to earn a new contract at Ibrox, but suggested that he does not believe that a new deal has been put on the table as of yet.

The Daily Record reported earlier in the month that he is out of contract with the Gers at the end of the campaign, and he had been attracting the attention of Sunderland as his current deal runs down.

It would be a major surprise if the Gers allowed Bates’ deal to run down much further given that Graeme Murty has used him in both of their games since the resumption of the Scottish Premiership season. And Bates insisted that his preference would be to stay exactly where he is.

“I’d hope to get something sorted with Rangers. Obviously, it’s up to the club and if they can speak to my representatives, it would be great,” he told the club’s official YouTube channel when he was asked about his contract situation.

“I’ve not heard nothing so I’m just going to keep speaking to my representative. He’ll do the stuff off the pitch and I’m just going to keep doing it on it,” he later added when asked whether a new deal has been offered yet by Rangers.

After seeing Danny Wilson head to MLS during the last few days, it seems to make little sense to allow Bates to leave the club also as he appears to have the potential to be a hugely important player for the Light Blues in the coming years.

He appears to be forming a very good partnership with Russell Martin at the heart of the defence, so it is no surprise that other teams are having a look at him right now.

And Rangers should look to slam the door on the speculation and Sunderland’s hopes of signing him by arranging to thrash out a deal as quickly as possible.
