Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers are currently 36 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership table.

Rangers chairman Dave King

Glasgow Rangers chairman Dave King’s comments to BBC Sport prove just how unprepared the Ibrox side were on their return to the Scottish Premiership.

King was asked, back in 2015, whether he believed Rangers would be able to compete for the Premiership title from their first season back in the top flight.

And the Light Blues’ chairman insisted that Rangers would be able to close the gap on Celtic.

He said: “Definitely. My feeling, sitting here today, is we can start next season [2016-17] intending to win the Premier League… The gap is not as big in my mind as it was three or four months ago.”

Of course, King’s comments have proven to be completely incorrect, as Rangers have struggled badly to keep pace with Celtic this term.

Indeed, the scale of the task ahead of Pedro Caixinha seems to have dawned on King now.

King’s aims for Rangers appear to have changed over the course of the campaign.

He said, after parting company with Mark Warburton: “I would have expected us to be equidistant between Aberdeen and Celtic. If we were 12 points behind Celtic and 12 points ahead of Aberdeen, I would have thought it was a fair position.”

Quite where King’s expectations for Rangers sit for next season now remain to be seen.

Rangers are expected to ring the changes over the summer, as they aim to close the gap to Celtic.

But King would be wise not to make any further promises to Rangers fans, otherwise he risks further humiliation at the hands of his side’s Glasgow rivals, who have been so dominant this term.
