Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers face a battle trying to win the race for second in the Scottish Premiership.
Rangers chairman Dave King
Rangers chairman Dave King has suggested that the expectation was for the Gers to put themselves in between Celtic and Aberdeen this term, and be an equal distance from both of their rivals, The Scotsman reports.
The Light Blues have largely struggled following their promotion to the top flight, and currently find themselves 33 points off of the Hoops, and perhaps more worryingly at this stage, eight points adrift of Derek McInnes’ men.
And King has stressed that he expected the side to be doing considerably better than how they currently are getting on.
“We are behind where I thought we would be on the field this season,” he said, as reported by The Scotsman.
Rangers’ Lee Wallace looks dejected after the game
“I would have expected us to be equidistant between Aberdeen and Celtic. If we were 12 points behind Celtic and 12 points ahead of Aberdeen I would have thought that was a fair position, given that the strategy was to win the Championship last year and try to add seven players to improve the squad and then add five, six or seven next year to try to improve it for Europe.”
With Celtic and Aberdeen on the number of points they are currently on, Rangers have 20 or 21 fewer points than the number that King would have been expecting from them at this stage of the season.
New Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha
And while the majority of the blame, certainly in King’s eyes, will probably be placed upon former boss Mark Warburton’s shoulders, the news arguably puts plenty of pressure on new manager Pedro Caixinha as King clearly has big expectations for the Gers, having expected the gap between the Old Firm to be considerably smaller than it currently is.
And those expectations for next season will arguably be just as lofty if Caixinha manages to lead the team on a brilliant run that sees them secure second spot in the table this season.
