Glasgow Rangers could have avoided paying compensation when bringing Pedro Caixinha to Ibrox, but instead decided to make an early appointment.

Rangers chairman Dave King has told the club’s official website that the Gers decided to appoint Pedro Caixinha before the summer, and thus, pay the compensation required to get him in as soon as possible, to give him time to assess the current squad.

Caixinha was coming towards the end of his contract with former club Al-Gharafa when the Light Blues decided that he was the right man to permanently succeed Mark Warburton at Ibrox.

And King has explained why the decision was made to spend money on getting him out of his previous job and bringing him to the Scottish Premiership rather than simply wait until he was a free agent at the end of the season.

“We could have avoided the significant financial compensation we incurred to bring the new management team on board by delaying the appointment until the end of the season,” he told the club’s official website.

“However, we believe that it is in the Club’s interest to give Pedro the balance of this season to assess the squad and make preparations in advance of the new season and the early competitive start that we envisage with Europa League qualifiers. It will be a further significant step forward to achieve our stated target of having European football back at Ibrox.”

It certainly appears to have been a bright move on the Gers’ part to appoint Caixinha during this season rather than wait until the summer when he has no competitive games to use to really assess the options he has available to him.

And the Portuguese certainly appears to have taken full advantage of the chance to work on the foundations of the squad, having handed first-team debuts to the likes of David Bates and Myles Beerman while also giving chances to some of the players within the squad that are perhaps closer to the fringes.

And hopefully for Rangers fans, Caixinha makes the most of having a full summer to work on the squad and vindicates the board’s decision to take the financial hit in the short-term.
