Glasgow Rangers have been extremely busy since Steven Gerrard arrived at Ibrox in the summer.

Dave King has told Rangers’ official website that the Gers will need to look at trimming their squad down in the future, but insisted that they are under no pressure to sell players.

It looks as though it is going to be a crucial January window for Steven Gerrard’s men. As things stand, Rangers could hit the Scottish Premiership summit this weekend should they beat Hearts, and they appear to be in with a genuine chance of being involved in a title race.

Having gone on a couple of underwhelming runs already this season, the supporters would be forgiven for thinking that they need to make a couple of quality additions when the window opens.

King hinted that the Gers could bring players in, but added that they also need to think about letting some leave. However, he insisted that those who move on from Ibrox are not leaving to free up funds for potential signings.

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if we did some business, but it will only be done if we think we can improve the overall value of the squad and the right player is available in January. It’s not going to be done just for the sake of it,” he told the club’s official website.

“They wouldn’t have to leave,” he added, hinting that they are under no pressure to sell players. “If the manager gave an argument to say ‘I would have taken the player in the summer anyway – let’s bring him in early as opposed to the summer’ – I think we would look at that as well.

“But it is important to get a balance as the squad is still quite large at the moment. I think even the manager recognises we probably do have too many players in the squad so we are going to have to look at trimming it down in any event.”

The large majority of Gerrard’s signings have been a success this term. But it would probably be little surprise if Umar Sadiq’s loan came to an early end.

Meanwhile, there are also a couple of players whose loan spells away from Rangers end in December but appear to have little chance of forcing their way into Gerrard’s plans. If they can find new clubs for some of those players, it would have to be considered a boost.

And if the Gers can shift some of those peripheral members of the squad, hold onto all of their key men and perhaps make a couple of marquee signings, then January would arguably prove to be the perfect platform from which Rangers can launch a title bid.
