Asmir Begovic is on stand-by to start for Chelsea in this weekend’s FA Cup final in case Thibaut Courtois is not fit.

Courtois missed Chelsea’s defeat to Manchester United through injury and Begovic will step in if the Belgian does not recover.

The game could be on of the biggest of Begovic’s career, and is against an opponent in Tottenham Hotspur who he once turned down the chance to play for.

Back in 2010 a deal was agreed for Begovic to join Spurs from Portsmouth as part of a double move along with Younes Kaboul.

Spurs were left angered as at the last minute the Bosnian snubbed Spurs in order to sign with Stoke City, with The Mirror reporting how Daniel Levy demanded £1 million from Portsmouth over the aborted move.

Begovic played first team football for Stoke, and was perhaps worried about a lack of it at Tottenham, with Heurelho Gomes as competition.

This did not prevent him from signing for Chelsea two years ago, where he has been a back-up.

This weekend is a potential chance for the Bosnian to prove to Chelsea that he is a real asset, while also showing that his career path has paid off since snubbing Spurs in 2010.

Against a rampant Tottenham side, his task will be far from easy.
