Daryl Murphy joined Newcastle United from Ipswich Town in the summer of 2016.
Newcastle United attacker Daryl Murphy has told The Chronicle that he wants to stay at the club until the end of his contract.
Murphy joined Newcastle from Championship rivals Ipswich in the summer of 2016 on a two-year contract.
According to Sky, the transfer fee that the Magpies had to pay to secure the services of the attacker was £3 million, rising to £4m if Newcastle are promoted to the Premier League.
The 33-year-old, who can operate as a striker or as a winger, has stated that he plans to play in the English top flight with Rafael Benitez’s side.
“My thoughts coming here were just that it’s a challenge,” Murphy told The Chronicle. “First and foremost it was about getting a chance and helping Newcastle win promotion.
“That was the main aim; still is. If we do, we will see what happens then. Of course I’d like to stay. I have got another year so we will see.”
Murphy has been able to play in only three Championship matches for Newcastle so far this season, scoring two goals and creating one chance in the process.
The attacker is past his prime and was signed to add quality to the substitutes’ bench, but he could still do a decent job in the Premier League.
Newcastle are second in the Championship table at the moment with 58 points from 27 matches, just two points behind leaders Brighton & Hove Albion.
