The Newcastle United man made his debut on Tuesday.
Daryl Murphy has told Newcastle United’s website that he was happy to make his debut in Tuesday’s League Cup win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’s Park, but was “disappointed” not to mark his bow with a goal.
The Magpies exacted revenge on Wolves last night as first-half goals from Matt Ritchie and Yoan Gouffran were enough to give United a League Cup quarter-final spot.
The victory came a matter of days after Walter Zenga’s side won on Tyneside by the same scoreline in a Championship fixture.
Murphy, a summer signing from Ipswich Town, was drafted into the first XI last night, but the Irish striker would have liked to have marked his debut by finding the net.
“It was nice to get the start, and to start at home. It was good to get the full 90 minutes, get the win and keep a clean sheet – the only thing I’m disappointed with is that I didn’t score, but that’ll come,” he said to the club’s official website.
You get the feeling that opportunities might be few and far between for Murphy, who is behind Dwight Gayle and probably Aleksandar Mitrovic in the pecking order.
He is, however, a different kind of striker than the two of them, so chances off the bench may be the norm for him this season for the most part.
