Yet with Gabriel Martinelli finding the net inside the first two minutes, Liverpool fans will have felt a familiar sinking feeling.
Instead, Darwin Nunez levelled it up for Liverpool only to see Bukayo Saka snatch the lead back for Arsenal on the stroke of half-time.

Nunez hasn’t set the world alight since joining Liverpool and has endured a mixed time in the Reds lineup.
It’s only just over two years ago that Nunez was playing in Spain’s second tier; he simply needs time to really hit his potential.
Nunez caused real problems for Gabriel Magalhaes and William Saliba though, with his goal richly deserved.
Luis Diaz broke down the Arsenal right and crossed for Nunez to stick it past Aaron Ramsdale from close range.
Nunez celebrated gleefully in front of the Arsenal fans and will be delighted to have scored in a big game.
The hope is that Nunez can now kick on and find the net regularly, justifying his lofty price tag and silencing his doubters in the process.
Nunez has certainly impressed many with his first-half display at the Emirates Stadium with Jamie Carragher praising his performance.
Carragher has taken to Twitter to celebrate Nunez’s goal, claiming that he has been ‘great’ in the first half and is delighted for him to have scored that goal.
With Luis Diaz now substituted through injury, Nunez will need to impress again in the second half with Gabriel and Saliba knowing that they are in a real game now.
