Phil Neville is said to be interested in taking over at the Stadium of Light and managing Sunderland.

Darron Gibson of Sunderland looks on before the Carabao Cup First Round match between Bury and Sunderland at Gigg Lane on August 10, 2017 in Bury, England.

Sunderland midfielder Darron Gibson may be leading the support of Phil Nevill being given the manager’s job at the Stadium of Light.

ESPN have reported on how Neville wants to take over from Simon Grayson at Sunderland.

And although Sunderland fans do not seem keen on the idea of Neville being placed at the helm, Gibson may be more supportive of the idea.

Three years ago, Gibson backed Neville to be Everton’s next boss, when David Moyes left.

Pundit Phil Neville smiles prior to The Emirates FA Cup Final match between Manchester United and Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium on May 21, 2016 in London, England.

He said: “It wouldn’t be a bad thing if he did come in – he’s a good coach. I think he knew he was coming to the end of his playing career and he turned to the coaching side and helped David Moyes a lot over the past few weeks so I’d be glad to see him get some sort of job at Everton.

“Nev knows the club inside out. He knows all the staff and the players well so it wouldn’t be a bad thing if he got the job.”

Neville was not given the Everton job at that time, and he ended up taking the number two job at Valencia to aid his managerial career.

Valencia CF assistant coach Phil Neville gives instructions prior to the La Liga match between Valencia CF and Atletico de Madrid at Estadi de Mestalla on March 06, 2016 in Valencia, Spain.

If Neville was to be given the Sunderland job it would be a major risk by the Wearside club.

Sunderland are currently sat at the bottom of the Championship table, with just one victory all season, and placing an inexperienced boss in charge at such a pressurised time would be a huge gamble.

Sunderland are expected to announce their new manager in the coming days, before their next match against Millwall in two weekends’ time.
