Darren O’Dea baffled by what Celtic seemingly need to do in the summer

Neil Lennon will be hoping to guide Celtic to nine Scottish Premiership titles in a row next season.

Darren O’Dea has claimed that he finds it ‘baffling’ that Celtic potentially need to make ‘drastic’ changes to their squad this summer after winning the treble treble.

Neil Lennon, who replaced Brendan Rodgers in the Parkhead dugout in February, guided the club to their historic triumph when they beat Hearts 2-1 in the Scottish Cup earlier on this month.

Despite such success, a lot has been made about how the players have performed this season, both under Rodgers and during Lennon’s brief period.

Former Celtic man O’Dea was left perplexed as to why the club seemingly need to think they need to go out and buy big in the summer in order to win their ninth straight title.

“I find it baffling [on drastic changes needed],” O’Dea told the Daily Record. “There is a perception of Celtic penny pinching but Peter Lawwell is phenomenal at his job, there’s no doubt about that. Last year they signed Odsonne Edouard for £9million, which is a record transfer fee. There is money going into the team. People think by throwing huge sums of money you get top, top players – you don’t. Celtic have to be more strategic.

“I understand it needs to be tweaked, it does need adding to, and people need to move on. But for people to say it needs drastic changes? There aren’t too many teams who have just done a treble Treble that you need to rip up and start again.

“There needs to be a sense of reality as well – it doesn’t need massive changes. With any football team you are always looking to improve and the board will back them. But there is a model there which has been very successful. Why would they start spending £15m-£20m on players?”

Throughout this season, Celtic had many players on loan, some worked out, whilst most of them didn’t and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the club opts against moving for those players again.

Many Celtic supporters would agree that the full-back area, the centre-back area and the striker role is where they will like their team to invest in.

If the Bhoys can do the job in those departments during the summer transfer window then it’ll increase their chances of lifting yet another Scottish Premiership title.
