West Bromwich Albion have already pulled off two free transfers in recent times, and could seemingly have another in the pipeline.
Darren Moore has told BBC WM that Bakary Sako is not going to be the last free agent that West Brom have a look at, with the Baggies boss pleasantly surprised by the market available to him outside of the transfer window.
West Brom spent some money in the summer, but undoubtedly have to be considered one of the shrewdest sides in the Championship after signing the likes of Dwight Gayle and Harvey Barnes on loan, while also getting Jonathan Bond, Tyrone Mears and Wes Hoolahan in on free transfers.
And it appears that Sako could potentially be the next player that may make the switch to The Hawthorns with the former Premier League forward on trial with the club. But Moore hinted that Sako could be followed by several more free agents in the near future.
“It won’t just be Bakary,” he told BBC WM. “We have had a look at many, many players because the opportunity has presented itself for us to do that.
“The thing that is surprising this season is how many free transfers are out there: good solid, excellent players.
“It is quite a unique year. So why not take the opportunity?”
While West Brom fans may prefer to see their club not rely too much on the free agent market, it does not appear to be hurting their chances of promotion at this stage.
The Baggies are third in the Championship and are playing some of the most exhilarating football in the division. And Mears has almost already vindicated the club’s decision to sign him by providing an assist against Millwall at the weekend.
And while some free agents may hardly capture the imagination when they arrive on trial, the intrigue surrounding each link may just provide the club with a slight lift that could be extremely beneficial as the demands of the Championship stretch the squad over the coming months.
