West Bromwich Albion have allowed Greg Halford to train with them.
West Bromwich Albion boss Darren Moore has told the Birmingham Mail that the club aren’t considering signing Greg Halford, he is merely training with the club.
The Baggies have already signed a couple of veteran free agents outside of the transfer window in order to bolster Moore’s squad, with Tyrone Mears and Wes Hoolahan both arriving.
Neither player has enjoyed much success, but Moore has recently allowed another veteran without a club to join West Brom for training.
Halford, 34, has been a free agent since leaving Cardiff City at the end of last season, and the Express and Star recently noted that he was handed 45 minutes in an Under-23 game last week.
It was claimed that West Brom were at least open to seeing Halford as a potential depth signing, given that he can play at centre back and in holding midfield, whilst he has played as a makeshift striker in the past too.
Formerly of rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers, Halford has endured a nomadic career, turning out for the likes of Cardiff, Birmingham City, Rotherham United, Brighton and Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth, Sunderland and Reading – but West Brom seemingly won’t be added to the list.
Manager Moore has revealed that the real reason Halford is with the club right now is because he lives just three miles away from West Brom’s training ground, and is being allowed to train having asked Moore if he could join in, rather than because a deal is being set up.
“No, Greg’s just simply been here. He lives local, he’s out of contract and he’s just asked us if he can come in and train,” said Moore. “I’ve been pleased to help him out in this situation, to help him train with the boys and to get up to full speed.”
“He’s just come into train with us. Nothing more, really. We’ve just provided him with an opportunity to come and train because he lives three miles from the training ground,” he added.
