West Bromwich Albion earned a hard-fought victory over Manchester United yesterday.
West Brom’s caretaker manager Darren Moore spoke to reporters after his side’s superb 1-0 win against Manchester United yesterday, and disagreed with Jose Mourinho’s claim that the visitor’s only real threat was from set plays, as quoted by the Express & Star.
The Baggies victory at Old Trafford was a rare bright moment during what has been a torrid campaign thus far, and was just their fourth win all season long.
Relegation to the Championship is still almost a certainty, with nine points separating them from 17th placed Swansea City, but the mood within the West Brom camp would have at least been lifted after yesterday’s win.
When told that Mourinho suggested that the Baggies’s only real threat was from set pieces, Moore disagreed, as quoted by the Express & Star:
“In general open play we had a couple of chances,” he said. “If you’re not going to score a goal from open play there’s always the set plays. There’s different ways of scoring. We’re delighted that we got the goal that way. Jose said we didn’t create much in open play because they dominated the ball a lot, you know when you come to Manchester United your work off the ball has to be very good. Today I was very pleased the players showed that.”
Next up for West Brom is a home game against Liverpool on Saturday, and nothing less than a win will do, if they are to have any chance whatsoever of avoiding the drop down to England’s second tier.
If Moore’s men can match the aptitude and effort that they displayed against United, they have every chance of beating the Reds.
