Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher wants Leeds United back in the top flight.

Former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher has told TeamTalk that he really wants Leeds United to get back to the Premier League.

Fletcher has fond memories of playing against Leeds at Elland Road, while he was representing the Red Devils.

The experienced central midfielder says that the atmosphere the Leeds fans created in their matches against United has stuck with him, and he now wants to see the Yorkshire club back in the top flight again.

“I think my second ever away game for Manchester United was against Leeds,” Fletcher, who now plays for West Bromwich Albion, said.

“It still sticks in my memory as one of the best atmospheres. It still rings as one of the most hostile environments I’ve played in. The rivalry between United and Leeds is big.

“It’s amazing how it’s stuck with me after all these years. Leeds is such a massive club –and they should be in the Premier League, and hopefully they’ll get back to it one day because it’s another great rivalry for Manchester United.

“It’s a big club, loaded with a great Scottish connection – everyone in Scotland knows about Leeds United.”

Leeds have not been a Premier League club since 2004, after a prolonged period of time without success.

Leeds fans have grown frustrated at their lack of progress in recent times, but Garry Monk seems to have increased optimism around Elland Road again.

Leeds look to be in a strong position to challenge for promotion this season, after making a bright start to the new campaign.

The Whites have won nine of their last 12 matches, and they now sit in sixth place in the Championship table.

Monk’s side are next in action after the international break, when they take on Newcastle United.
