Speaking to the club’s official website, West Bromwich Albion midfielder Darren Fletcher has backed Liverpool to challenge for the title this season.

The Reds were in impressive form again over the weekend as they secured a 2-1 win over the Baggies in Saturday’s late kick-off.

That result took them to 20 points from their first nine games and, courtesy of Arsenal and Manchester City drawing in their games, level on points at the top of the Premier League table.

It means the Reds must be considered as title contenders at this stage of the season and Fletcher says he believes they are but warns there is a long way to go yet.

“I think they’ll be one of the teams, they’re doing alright,” he told the club’s official website.

“Whether they can go and win the league remains to be seen. Obviously, they’ve started the season well but there’s a long way to go.

“Leagues aren’t won in October and November, they’re won March to May.”

If Liverpool are to be title winners this season they will have to show vast improvement in the defensive parts of their game.

So far they have conceded 11 goals, the most of any team in the top six, as well as only managing to secure one clean sheet.

That is a record that will need vast improvement if they are to be challengers throughout, something Jurgen Klopp will likely be well aware of despite his insistence otherwise.
