Darren Bent said on talkSPORT (6:50pm, January 31, 2021) that the signing of Ben Davies would send a negative message to Liverpool youngsters.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker questioned whether Liverpool do not have any young defenders coming through the ranks.
According to Sky Sports, the defending Premier League champions will complete the signing of Davies from Preston North End today.
The 25-year-old defender has extensive experience in the Championship with Preston.
Bent said about Davies on talkSPORT (6:50pm, January 31, 2021): “If they go and sign Ben Davies for £2 million, it looks like, what does that say? Is there no other kids coming through then? Is there no one else there they want to take another chance on? I am not quite sure what kind of message that sends out to them.”
Does Darren Bent have a point?
Liverpool have problems defensively. Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are long-term injury concerns, while Joel Matip and Fabinho have also been missing.
The situation is so dire that midfielder Jordan Henderson is playing in defence at the moment.

True, Rhys Williams and Nathaniel Phillips have also played this season, but they are young and very inexperienced.
With Liverpool aiming to win the Premier League title and the Champions League, manager Jurgen Klopp needs cover in defence.
It would be a risk to throw in an academy player into the team now, and while Davies is coming from a Championship club, he does have experience of playing regular competitive football.
