Darren Bent thinks Aurier is a liability, thinks Pochettino may regret Trippier sale

Tottenham Hotspur continue to have major issues at right back.

Pundit Darren Bent has told Sky Sports’ The Debate that he thinks Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino may now regret selling right back Kieran Trippier.

Spurs took on Bayern Munich in the Champions League on Tuesday night, and were hoping to take the momentum from their 2-1 win over Southampton into the game.

However, Spurs were thumped 7-2 by the Bundesliga giants, with ex-Arsenal winger Serge Gnabry smashing four goals in a stunning victory for Bayern.

That just added to what has been a troubling start to the season for Spurs fans, with Pochettino seemingly not really knowing his best team.

Serge Aurier looked set to leave over the summer, but is now first-choice right back despite issues defensively and with his discipline, whilst Kyle Walker-Peters – first-choice at the start of the season – has made just one appearance since the end of August.

Right back has been a huge issue for Spurs, and some may now feel that the decision to sell Kieran Trippier to Atletico Madrid after one less-than-great season was a mistake.

That’s at least the view of pundit and ex-Tottenham striker Bent, who thinks Pochettino may have let the England international go a little too early.

Bent added that he thinks Walker-Peters is the best right back at the club, even suggesting that Aurier is ‘a bit of a liability’, slating his petulance having been sent off against Southampton last weekend too.

“I like Walker-Peters, I’ve said this from the get-go,” said Bent. “I wonder now if Pochettino does think ‘well, maybe I let Kieran Trippier go too early’, because Serge Aurier is a bit of a liability. Positionally, he’s all over the place, he’s always got that tendency to dive in and give a foul away, or – as we saw at the weekend – a red card for petulance. For me, when you get to these big games in these big competitions, you can’t afford to be having passengers, for me Serge Aurier is one where he’s always walking that tightrope where you don’t quite know what’s going to happen,” he added.
