Darren Bent gave his take on Everton reportedly about to sign James Rodriguez from Real Madrid on talkSPORT (5:10pm, September 3, 2020).

The former Tottenham Hotspur striker, who now works as a pundit for talkSPORT, said that he is unsure if James would be a success at Everton.

Bent questioned whether the Colombia international – who can operate as an attacking midfielder or as a winger – would be able to do the defensive work for the Toffees.

According to Sky Sports, Everton have reached an agreement with Spanish and European giants Madrid.

The 29-year-old will sign a three-year contract with the Toffees and will undergo a medical, according to the report.

Bent said on talkSPORT (5:10pm, September 3, 2020): “I am really unsure about James Rodriguez. I think he is a top player. He has been at Real Madrid, and he has been at Bayern, and I have said this before.

“Them teams have a lot of possession, they dominate games. He is going to Everton now. No disrespect to Everton, they are going to play some of the top teams and they are not going to have as much possession, so he will have to do a lot of defensive work. Can he do that?”

The former Tottenham striker added: “There was no doubt about Ozil’s talent, but look at what has happened to him, and them two are similar, number 10.”

Good signing for Everton?

James struggled for playing time at Madrid last season, but there is no doubt that he has a lot of talent and is creative.

The attacker worked with Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti at Madrid and Bayern, and the two know each other well.

The Colombian is an attacking player, and Ancelotti may set up his team so that he does not have to do much defensive work so that he can concentre on scoring goals and creating chances.
