Darren Bent has shut down a suggestion from a Leeds United supporter that his team is a ‘bigger club’ than Chelsea by adding that the London outfit have now become a ‘powerhouse now’, as he told talkSPORT.

The former Premier League striker also noted that, under the previous owner Roman Abramovich, Chelsea won two Champions League trophies or European Cups in old money.

Whilst Leeds United are one of England’s most historic clubs, they only recently returned to the promised land after being out of the wilderness for nearly two decades.

During that time, Chelsea have been the most successful team in England, winning numerous Premier League trophies, every domestic honour possible, and European honours.

It could be argued that back when Leeds were in the Premier League, at the start of the 2000s, they were perhaps ‘bigger than’ Chelsea.

But a lot has changed since then, with Bent sharing his thoughts on the argument, as well as throwing Tottenham and Manchester City’s names into the hat.

“Chelsea, you honestly think you are bigger than Chelsea?!,” said Bent. “When it comes to the Chelsea argument. I don’t think you say Leeds are a bigger club than Chelsea when they have won two Champions Leagues in the last 20 years.

“To say that they are the fourth biggest club in the country, no! Chelsea are a bigger club than them. Manchester City are a bigger club. These guys are powerhouses now. Tottenham are a bigger club.

“How long do you get to be this big, big club before it runs out?!”

LEEDS AND CHELSEA FANBASES

Whilst success on the pitch has sky-rocketed for those at Stamford Bridge and been the complete opposite for those in Yorkshire, there perhaps can be an argument with the fanbases.

Despite Leeds spending so many years away from the big time, one thing that has never gone away is their support.

Leeds themselves would argue that their fanbase is far bigger than what those in West London can conjure up but, at the end of the day, it’s not the only thing that provides the making of a big club or the biggest.
