Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Conor Coady is yet to receive an England call.
Darren Bent has claimed that Wolves defender Conor Coady ‘doesn’t seem fussed’ that he hasn’t been called up to the England squad as the former striker can understand why Gareth Southgate hasn’t selected him.
England’s backline is one of the weakest points of their team, with Harry Maguire and Micheal Keane starting at the heart of England’s defence as they comfortably beat Bulgaria last time out.
Other defenders who were called up by Southgate for these current qualifiers were Liverpool’s Joe Gomez, whilst Aston Villa’s Tyrone Mings earned his debut call.
Speaking to GameDay Verdict on TalkSport (07/09/2019 at 8:15 pm), former Premier League striker Bent commented on Coady’s continued omission from England’s squad.
“It’s strange,” Bent told TalkSport. “He plays in the middle of a three and he has played well for a number of seasons now. When you hear him talk about it, he doesn’t seem fussed either. ‘Well, if it comes it comes then if it doesn’t then it doesn’t’.
“Out of the defenders, as a pure defender, you wouldn’t say that’s his strong point. His strong point is on the ball, he can play out from the back and he’s good with his feet. Maguire’s good with his feet. John Stones is good with his feet.
“I can kind of understand both sides really why the Wolves fans themselves perhaps feel disheartened that he hasn’t had the opportunity yet. But I can see Gareth Southgate and why he’s not putting him in the squad.”
Manchester City defender John Stones is another defender who has been a regular under Southgate, but he is currently on the sidelines with an injury.
It could be argued that the fact that Coady plays in a back three at club level than that perhaps goes against him because Southgate has played a flat back four since the last World Cup.
