Darren Bent has claimed that Dominic Calvert Lewin and Ollie Watkins would join Arsenal because they are ‘bigger’ than Everton and Aston Villa, as he told talkSPORT (05/10/21 at 7:25 am).

Rumours have surfaced the Arsenal want to add either the Everton or Villa striker to their ranks this summer, in order to boost their squad.

All three clubs aren’t in Europe this term, with Arsenal being the most recent team to compete to play in midweek, and both Everton and Villa aspiring to make that jump.

Even though Villa lost star man Jack Grealish this summer, they have spent heavily during these past few years, so have the Toffees, but FFP prevented that from happening during the recently-concluded window.

Nonetheless, Bent labelled both Calvert-Lewin and Watkins as ‘exciting’ players and shared who he would pick to sign between the two for the Gunners, if he had a choice.

“I think they probably could do,” said Bent. “I think Everton are having a phenomenal season. Aston Villa are a club on the up.

“But we are talking about Arsenal football club. They are bigger than two. Although, they haven’t had a good couple of years.

“Listen, I will never dismiss Aston Villa. I had a good couple of years there. But, in terms of size of club, than Arsenal are a bigger club than both of them.

“Where Arsenal are going, at the minute, it looks like they are on the rise. There’s no reason why they can’t because they are two exciting young talents. If I had to opt for one of them then I would opt for Calvert-Lewin over Watkins.”

Both Calvert-Lewin and Watkins are at the top of their game, both for their club and earning those England calls.

Watkins is currently on national duty, but Everton’s towering hitman has had to miss out through injury.

Last season, Watkins, who is a boyhood Arsenal fan, scored on three occasions against Mikel Arteta’s men, including a brace at the Emirates.

He has already scored in London this season – against Tottenham last time out – and he will be looking to be a thorn in Arsenal’s side once more in a few weeks time.
