Darren Anderton has told Sporting Bet that he believes Tottenham Hotspur will still sign Everton’s Ross Barkley before the transfer window shuts.

Tottenham have been linked with a big-money move for the 23-year-old since the window opened more or less, but The Daily Mail reported that Spurs might shelve their interest after Barkley picked up a hamstring problem which ruled him out for three months.

As a result, speculation about a move to the North Londoners has cooled somewhat, but Lilywhites legend Anderton is confident that the transfer will still materialise.

At Tottenham, Barkley would be playing under one of the best man-managers around in Mauricio Pochettino, and the 45-year-old says such compassionate methods would bring on Barkley’s game a whole lot more.

He told Sporting Bet: “I think Ross Barkley will still sign for Tottenham despite other interest.

“I think the comments from Ronald Koeman were strange, Ross Barkley is a fantastic player, but I think he needs a manager that will love him and improve his game, like Pochettino, and coming to Tottenham will be the perfect pillar for him.”

Nevertheless, Barkley could struggle to feature in Pochettino’s best XI every week, by virtue of Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen’s brilliance, and Anderton says Spurs fans wouldn’t be best pleased if one is dropped to facilitate the Everton man.

He added: “With the current setup, Ross will struggle to get into the team. I think if Barkley comes he’ll want some reassurance that he’ll be playing, but for me, I don’t know how you can change that front three of Kane, Alli and Eriksen – it’s arguably the best front three in the league.

“It’s difficult. Barkley wants to play, but I’m sure Spurs fans would be very upset if Alli or Eriksen were dropped, as they play in the same position.”
