Ibrox club Glasgow Rangers is looking for a new Gers manager, and ex-players Derek McInnes and Giovanni van Bronckhorst are the bookmakers’ favourites.
Rangers are on the lookout for a new manager following the departure of Pedro Caixinha. Caixinha was dismissed by the Ibrox outfit last month, and Graeme Murty is the first-team manager for the time being.
It is hard to see Murty getting the Rangers managerial job on a full-time basis. Perhaps the 42-year-old will be in charge of the Gers for the next one or two matches, but one suspects that the Scottish giants will bring in a permanent successor to Caixinha soon.
Who could it be? Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes is the favourite for the role, according to Sky Bet, with odds of 1/2 in his favour. The 46-year-old is a former Rangers midfielder and has done a great job at Scottish Premiership rivals Aberdeen.
Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the second favourite for Rangers managerial role. According to Sky Bet, the 42-year-old former Netherlands international’s chances of becoming the Ibrox boss are rated at 9/2.
Van Bronckhorst, who is in charge of Dutch club Feyenoord at the moment, played for Rangers from 1998 until 2001, winning the league title and the Scottish Cup twice each and the League Cup once.
BT Sport presenter Darrell Currie, who is well known and is well respected, has said that Van Bronckhorst should be given the managerial role at Rangers.
“In my eyes Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the stand-out candidate for the Rangers job because of his links with the club and the job he’s done at Feyenoord,” Currie told BT Sport.
“It might not be going so well for him this season but I think he’s shown enough that if Rangers can afford to move for him they should.
“Whether he would be interested in coming back to Ibrox is another question entirely but I think he would be a good fit and it’s imperative the club make the right appointment.”
