Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has suggested on social networking site Twitter that Sunderland and Portsmouth are favourites for automatic promotion from League One this season.

Portsmouth are at the top of the League One table at the moment with 34 points from 15 matches, four points clear of second-placed Peterborough.

Sunderland, who got relegated from the Championship at the end of last season, are just a point behind Posh.

Fight for promotion

Portsmouth, Peterborough and Sunderland all have strong squads in League One, and their league positions at the moment are a reflection of that.

However, it is too early to call which two of the aforementioned teams will get promoted, as it is a long season and there will be twists and turns.

What will be key is maintaining consistency. Sunderland have not always played well this season, but Jack Ross’s side have found a way to win, and the Black Cats will need that for the rest of the 2018-19 campaign.
