Newcastle United stopper Freddie Woodman has enhanced his reputation with a brilliant showing at the under-20 World Cup.

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has told the club’s official Youtube channel that he looked at signing Newcastle United’s Freddie Woodman.

Posh ended up moving for Reading’s Jonathan Bond on loan, but Woodman was an option for the League One side.

Newcastle are said to be willing to loan out Woodman by the Chronicle, despite his impressive performances for England at under-20 level this summer.

And MacAnthony said: “We were looking at him [Jonathan Bond] and the young Newcastle goalkeeper [Freddie Woodman], as well.

“We are confident with the amount of games Bondy has played and the clubs he’s been at that he’s going to be a good addition for us.”

Woodman is regarded very highly at Newcastle, and is seen as a future number one at St. James’ Park.

However, breaking into Newcastle’s team this season will be tough for the young stopper.

Newcastle have a lot of more senior options to pick from, and during their first season back at Premier League level, Rafael Benitez is unlikely to pick an untested youngster.

Woodman’s previous loan spells have come at the likes of Crawley Town and Kilmarnock.

Woodman could well return to Kilmarnock next season, as the Scottish side are keen to bring him back – according to a report in the printed edition of The Sun on 2nd July.
