Sunderland have snapped up midfielder George Dobson.
Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has taken to Twitter to claim that Darren Ferguson decided against signing George Dobson this summer.
Dobson, 21, completed his move to Sunderland last week after weeks of rumours, leaving Walsall to pen a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light.
Formerly of Arsenal and West Ham United, Dobson impressed last season despite Walsall’s relegation, showing promise as a hard-working midfielder with bite.
Sunderland will now hope that he can replace Lee Cattermole in their midfield, with Jack Ross seemingly picking the youngster out as Cattermole’s heir alongside a veteran in Grand Leadbitter.
Dobson looks to be a fine signing for Sunderland, but it all could have been so different for him, as Peterborough United were given the chance to sign him.
Chairman MacAnthony confirmed on Twitter that Peterborough were approached about signing Dobson, but manager Ferguson snubbed a move, feeling Peterborough had similar options already.
Alex Woodyard and Louis Reed are already in place for the Posh, whilst George Boyd has been brought back to the club with a central midfield role in mind.
That meant Dobson wasn’t exactly needed at Peterborough, but MacAnthony does believe that he has ‘loads of potential’ – something shich should excite Sunderland fans.
