Sheffield United sit five points and four places above Peterborough United in League One.
Peterbrough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony claims that Sheffield United failed in a bid for one of his players on deadline day.
MacAnthony has not gone as far as naming the player, but says it was a centre-back.
When asked on Twitter what he thought of the Blades’ chances this season, and whether he had dealt with the Yorkshire side’s chairman, Kevin McCabe, the Irishman replied: “Chris (Wilder is) a great manager. Never met or dealt with McCabe but on deadline day they tried to buy a centre-back from us.
“Only time that’s happened, I think.”
Earlier in the summer, Sheffield United were said to have targeted Posh stopper Ryan Tafazolli, then of Mansfield Town.
However, the 25-year-old moved to London Road instead, and a bid for him so soon after his transfer seems unlikely.
That leaves either Jak Baldwin or Ricardo Santos as possible candidates, although the latter has played only two times for Peterborough this season.
Another historic Blades target, Michael Bostwick, has been playing in midfield this season, making it unlikely that MacAnthony would describe him as a defender.
The identity of the player is perhaps trivial now, though, with Sheffield United, who sit five points and four places above Peterborough, later signing Ethan Ebanks-Landell from Wolves.
