Former Glasgow Rangers defender Danny Wilson left Ibrox during the January transfer window.

Danny Wilson of Rangers arrives at the ground during the Scottish Championships match between Greenock Morton FC and Rangers at Cappielow Park on September 27, 2015 in Greenock, Scotland.

Danny Wilson has told The Scottish Sun that he has no issue with Graeme Murty following his January move, and insisted that the Rangers boss wanted him to stay at Ibrox.

Wilson surprised many last month when he left the Scottish Premiership for Major League Soccer, as he joined Colorado Rapids. The defender initially attempted to set the record straight on his move earlier this week, as he told The Scottish Sun that he wanted to stay with the Light Blues but director of football Mark Allen had made it clear that he was free to leave as a new contract would not be on the table.

Rangers manager Graeme Murty during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, in comments also reported by The Scottish Sun, Murty suggested that the defender was the one who wanted to leave the club, and he did not want to keep players who did not want to stay.

But Wilson has suggested that Murty wanted the 26-year-old to remain at Ibrox beyond the January transfer window, while he also praised the Gers boss.

Danny Wilson of Rangers arrives at the stadium prior to the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Ranger at Celtic Park on December 30, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“Graeme Murty was great with me too, especially in the last few months. I’ve got no issue with him,” he told The Scottish Sun. “He asked me to be a leader for him on and off the pitch. I felt I did that. He gave me a lot of responsibility.

“Whenever I spoke to him he was genuine. He wanted to keep me, but there was obviously an underlying issue at the club.”

It would be no surprise if Murty wanted to keep Wilson. His form leading up to the winter break in Scotland was excellent and it looked as if he was going to be a real stalwart of the side while Murty remained in charge.

And while the manager may have hoped that the defender would stay, it appears that Wilson and Rangers have now got themselves into a position that suits everyone, with the former Hearts man finding the stability that he did not have at Ibrox as his contract ran down, while the Gers have stumbled across a very impressive defensive partnership in David Bates and Russell Martin since Wilson’s exit.
