Danny Wilson faces plenty of competition for a place in the Glasgow Rangers side with several new faces arriving at Ibrox.

Danny Wilson has told Rangers’ official website that Pedro Caixinha informed him at the end of last season that he would be looking to bring more defenders into the club this summer, but the centre-back has insisted that the additional competition is only a positive thing.

The Gers struggled to settle on a central defensive partnership last term due to a number of factors, including injury and some players’ poor form, so it is hardly a surprise that Caixinha looked to bolster his options during the summer.

Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso have arrived. And while some Light Blues players may be worried for their places in the side with the number of signings that have been made, Wilson explained that Caixinha was open about the fact that the 25-year-old would face a tougher task trying to get into the team during the coming season.

“There was always going to be new defenders coming in, I spoke to the manager at the end of last season and he said he was going to bring some players in,” he told the club’s official website.

“The new boys have come in and we expect there to be even more competition for places this season and I am no different.

“I just need to concentrate on getting myself fit and giving myself the best opportunity to get back in the team.”

While there may well have been no particular motive behind Caixinha’s decision to inform Wilson of his intentions regarding strengthening his options at the back, it could have perhaps just as easily been something of a warning from the Portuguese.

Wilson showed some decent form towards the end of last season, but the Gers boss may perhaps have been hoping that by telling the former Liverpool man that he faced greater competition during the coming campaign, it would help bring the very best out of the centre-back as he tries to prove that he could be a decent partner for one of the summer signings.
