Ward is currently on a season-long loan at Huddersfield

Huddersfield Town goalkeeper Danny Ward hopes the regular game time he gets on loan with the Championship league leaders can help him get first team football at the club he’s on loan from: Liverpool, BBC Sport reports.

Ward made two first team appearances for the Reds towards the back end of last season after he was recalled from a loan spell with Aberdeen during the midway point of the campaign. He managed to become the club’s number two keeper, getting ahead of Adam Bogdan in the process, and was cover for Simon Mignolet for the rest of the season.

Ward added that he feels regular game time, both at Aberdeen last season and Huddersfield this time is aiding his development, and suggested the spell as second choice to Mignolet last season may have held him back a little.

And he could face tougher competition if and when he returns to Anfield given Jürgen Klopp’s decision to sign Loris Karius from Mainz this summer.

Ward told BBC Sport: “You have to strive and aim to be at the top and hopefully I can get there.

“You don’t sign for a club to settle for what you’ve got. You’ve always got to try and push yourself to be the best.”

“There’s no frustration for me.

“If Liverpool want to have the best players that suit their style then I hope he [Karius] does well.”

The 23-year-old signed a new long-term contract in the summer at Anfield. Some would consider that is a demonstration of the Reds’ have faith in him, and wanting him to return to push for the number one spot, others would suggest that it is the club protecting the value of one of their promising prospects.

Given that Mignolet is 28, and Karius is 23, it’s hard to think that Ward would really push for a place at Anfield in the next season or two if both players remain. As Karius was signed by Klopp in the summer, with a possible view to be a long term number one, then it’s likely that Mignolet would eventually move on if either of them do.

For now, all Ward can do is keep his head down and work hard to impress for Huddersfield and Wales when called upon. He has featured in all 12 of the Terriers’ games so far this season and there are no signs of him losing that place for the time being.

It will be interesting to see how he progresses over the course of this season – and what happens afterwards.
