Tottenham Hotspur should arguably join the race to sign Celtic defender Kieran Tierney.

Despite their lack of activity in the transfer market, it is fair to say that it has turned into a turbulent summer for Tottenham – especially in the full-back department.

Kyle Walker has moved to Manchester City while Danny Rose appears to have left his relationship with many Spurs fans in tatters after his incredible interview in The Sun where, amongst other things, he suggested that if a concrete bid came in for him, he would consider it due to his desire to move back up north before the end of his career.

Rose was adamant to point out that he is not actively looking to move away, but it would hardly be a surprise if his comments reported in The Sun put the teams interested in the left-back on alert, and thus, Tottenham would perhaps be wise to consider bolstering their full-back options this summer, even with Kyle Walker-Peters doing well on his debut in the wake of Kyle Walker’s move to Manchester City.

One player who may perhaps not seem to be the marquee target that Spurs fans crave, but may actually be the ideal player to target is Celtic full-back Kieran Tierney – whose stock appears to be rising with every single performance he puts in.

Tierney would not come cheap as he clearly has the potential to be a star, but given that many write off the quality of the Scottish Premiership in comparison with some other leagues, he may be cheaper currently than some of the other players on Mauricio Pochettino’s shopping list, and his value will undoubtedly rise as each window passes.

Though the 20-year-old emerged as a left-back, he has also shown that he is more than capable of playing on the right or in the middle of the defence and making it look like either is his natural position.

That ability to be versatile should alert Pochettino as he could provide additional depth right across the back four – which could prove particularly important depending on what Rose’s future now holds over the next year or so.

Convincing the youngster to leave Celtic may be difficult as he is clearly loved at Parkhead, and evidently loves the club – but if they can make a bid that convinces all parties to accept a deal, then that loyalty would undoubtedly make him an asset to Pochettino.

Making the step up to the Premier League may take Tierney a little bit of time – but this is a player who has played in the Champions League and international football already, and those who doubt his potential just need to look at how the likes of Virgil van Dijk and Spurs’ own Victor Wanyama have adapted to life in England following their arrivals from Celtic Park.

Tierney’s current ability and likely potential surely makes a move to the Premier League almost inevitable at some stage, and with Spurs arguably needing to bolster their full-back options this summer, getting the chequebook out and bidding for the Celtic man now before he reaches his full value may be a very smart move indeed.
