Tottenham Hotspur’s win over Rochdale last night was overshadowed by the controversial VAR system.

Spurs dominated the game from the very first whistle against their League One opponents last night, but it was a match that will be remembered for the controversy involving the VAR system, rather than some of the good football displayed by Mauricio Pochettino’s men.

The Lilywhites had a seemingly perfectly good goal from Erik Lamela disallowed after a two-minute wait, after Fernando Llorente was punished for a slight infringement.
Son Heung-min’s penalty was then disallowed, after he paused in his run-up, another decision that was made after VAR consultation.
Rose, 27, lambasted the VAR system, when speaking to reporters after the game, and suggested that it overshadowed a good game of football, as quoted by the Independent:

“It was interesting, very frustrating and just confusing more than anything. That has just overshadowed a good performance by us and a good performance by Rochdale. There is no word to describe it except frustrating, even though we won 6-1.”
The video replay system has been in use for cup games since the turn of the year, and its teething problems are obvious to see.
With the monumental amounts of money at stake in today’s game, though, it seems as though VAR is here to stay, so players and managers have no choice but to get used to it.
