The former Liverpool player is concerned Jurgen Klopp does not have a preferred centre-back pairing.
Danny Murphy and Jamie Carragher before the match
Liverpool take on Chelsea this evening in what should be a highly entertaining Premier League clash.
The Reds go into the game off the back of a brilliant win against champions Leicester City last weekend and full of attacking confidence.
But whilst Liverpool are thriving going forward, one former Anfield midfielder still believes there are major question marks surrounding the defence and goalkeeper.
Burton Albion’s Calum Butcher in action with Liverpool’s Joel Matip
Danny Murphy was speaking on talkSPORT yesterday (15/09/16) when he commented on the centre-back and goalkeeping positions at Liverpool – mentioning how the loss to Burnley earlier in the season still concerned him:
“The Burnley performance is the worry because, not the performance, but the result.
“Defensively I still think they are a little bit vulnerable
“I still don’t think he (Klopp) has found his best centre-half pairing. Will he bring the new ‘keeper in sooner rather than later? He’s obviously bought him in for a reason.
“There’s a lot to be positive about but this is the best test yet.”
Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren after the game
Liverpool will be boosted by the fact Dejan Loven is back from injury for the game. They will also be pleased to see Joel Matip performing well since he was brought into the side.
Fans have failed to be convinced by new signing Ragnar Klavan or by Lucas Leiva at the heart of the Liverpool defence. So perhaps in time Matip and Lovren will become the first-choice centre-back pairing.
In goal Liverpool signed Loris Karius this summer but the German broke his hand in pre-season. He was largely expected to take over from the questionable Simon Mignolet this term. However, the Belgian has done little wrong this term and Karius may have to bide his time a little while longer yet.
