Former Liverpool star Danny Murphy feels the club need to bolster their attacking options ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline, The Mirror report.

Fresh off their UEFA Champions League win in June, Jurgen Klopp hasn’t felt the need to invest heavily in his squad this summer. He’s instead focused on developing the talents he already has available.

However, with big challenges ahead this term, including trying to mount another serious title challenge in the English Premier League, some feel that the Reds need to splash the cash a little and deliver signings in some key areas.

Murphy is certainly one, believing that targeting a versatile attacker who can help support Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah is crucial.

As quoted by The Mirror, the former midfielder said: “I think with Sturridge going – and I know they have Xherdan Shaqiri and Divock Origi – the front three need pushing.

“If they could get someone who can play in varying roles of that front three and really push them and give the team strength in depth, that would be huge for Liverpool.”

There’s no doubt there will be a reliance on the Reds’ electric front three this term. The trio scored 69 goals between them last season after all.

The problem Liverpool have is that attracting the calibre of player who can provide competent back-up or relief without compromising that contribution comes at a massive cost.

Star players are unlikely going to be happy coming to Anfield to sit on the bench either.

A viable route to go down could be signing a young, hungry player who has significant potential. However, with time running out on the transfer window, it’s beginning to look unlikely the club will pursue that kind of option either.

By persisting with Shaqiri and Origi, Klopp at least has trusted talents he knows can step up on the big occasion if need be.

Sure, another ready to compete might be optimal, but there are realities to consider.
